We take you through the oldest township/native settlement in Harare! Mbare is located on the southern side of Harare, about 5km from the Central business district. Our host gives you a backdrop of the colonial segregation, racial discriminations and how the natives also appropriated the spaces towards their fight for freedom and recognition. The mix of cultures from different parts of the country and other regional countries makes Mbare a rich cultural pot with authentic old and contemporary movements that are still been celebrated now. Get the chance to hear how influential stories about the “matanyere” ( refuse collectors ) ,”katsekere” (native tax collectors),”sherbeen queens”, “ mapoto”(cooking pots), ”juju”(black magic), Mahovhorosi (male bars) and pitikoti (female prone) taverns contribute to the socio-political structure of Mbare. Please bring comfortable walking shoes and a hat. Remember to carry a bit of money, ideally a few $1 notes, so you can buy a few things along the way to support the local vendors.
