Probably one of the most highly recommended activities in Zanzibar, the Safari Blue exceeds expectations. Well the original Safari Blue tour that is! Don’t be swayed into booking with other companies, as I’ve read reviews of other travellers who had their trip ruined because of this. The thing when travelling is, you never have enough time to do everything (unless you’re a full time traveller). So this trip encompasses several activities into one, so you can get the full Zanzibar experience in one day. If you’re planning a trip to Zanzibar, here are 5 reasons why you should add the Safari Blue tour onto your itinerary.

You ride in style on this excursion. They have lovely, well maintained boats, which carry about 12 passengers. The boat is powered by motor, but on the way back, they open the sails and you can enjoy a slow ride home after the day’s activities. Be sure to carry good beach shoes, as you have to wade through the water to get on and off the boats. Flip flops will suffice but if you have anything a bit more secure that would be even better. They serve cold drinks, water and fresh fruit on the boat as well.

The trip took us to Menai Bay, which is a conservation area located on the south-west part of the island. Snorkelling is basically swimming with a mask and a snorkel (breathing pipe), and some fins. If you’ve never done it before, the crew will assist you with picking your gear and will give you a life jacket if needed. Otherwise, you can go ahead and pick up your gear and jump off the boat. Needless to say, you’ll see a lot of different fish at their chosen snorkelling spots. It’s beautiful there. There are two opportunities to snorkel on the trip. If, like me, you’re tired after the first swim, you can relax under the shade on the sand banks near Kwale Island.

Yes, you will get an opportunity to see dolphins whilst of the dhow boats. Some follow the boat, so get your camera ready (don’t be like me)! Obviously, with nature, there are no guarantees. You might not see them, but it seems most travellers do get to see them! If you want to spend the day viewing dolphins however, then you need to check out the dolphin excursions in Kizimkazi, as this is the best place to go for the ultimate dolphin-watching experience.
4. Sea food lunch
All that snorkelling and lounging on the sand bank works up an appetite. They prepare the best sea food lunch you will ever taste. On the menu was lobster, two types of grilled fish, grilled chicken served with rice and a mixed vegetable stew. If that doesn’t get your mouth watering, I don’t know what will! Wash it down with some of the local Kilimanjaro beer, or a fresh fruit juice. They offer more fruit as well, so take the opportunity to try the local fruit. And if you need that final kick, try some coffee with Amarula. They have a dance group performing during the lunch, so you can go ahead and join them on the dance floor afterwards, or you can take a walk and visit the different stalls to see what they have on sale. Personally, I thought it was the highlight of the day.
5.Swimming in the lagoon
Next to Kwale Island, there is a lagoon surrounded by a mangrove forest where you can take a dip. This depends on the tide though, so don’t be too upset if they don’t take you here on your trip. It’s not too deep, so again, if you can’t swim, you can get a floaty and just chill in the water for a bit. It’s a great way to end the day.
